Sonata is an animated short film directed by Ryan McDougal, as part of his final thesis at Vancouver Film School. This is the short and simple tale of a man, who in a fleeting moment of hesitation, must decide whether or not to take his chance.
Remaining on the subject of romantic, animated short films, here is yet another simple yet beautiful video. Ryan McDougal, a student at Vancouver Film School when he made this film, created this from scratch: from the script and direction, to the final finished film. This was his final thesis.
I really don’t know what it is about animated romantic films that appeals to me. Maybe, it is just that: a combination of animation and romance. Animation has that uncanny ability to take you back to your childhood…the innocence characteristic of a hopeless romantic. So, no matter how simple the tale told through this medium, the combination of romance and animation never ceases to strike a chord.
Sonata is about one fleeting moment in a man’s life. He is troubled by one question…one which we can all identify with: to go for it, or not?.
Simple, short, charismatic in technique, and the music is beautiful.
Enjoy this one.
