Short Film: The Formorian (2007)

Posted on May 14, 2009June 12, 2025 by VoxParadox

The Formorian is a fantasy short film, depicting a mythological time in ancient Ireland where men were Gods, and swords retold their conquests to their masters.

The Formorian is a fantasy short film directed by Aideen McCarthy in 2007, with an ancient Irish legend as the backdrop. Set during the the time of the Second Battle of Moytura, in ancient Ireland, in which the God-like people of Dana are fighting a prolonged war against the demonic race called The Formorians, this film tells the story of one disheartened warrior who decides to return home. However, the journey back becomes another battle he has to fight, before he runs out of time.

Quoting from the film’s synopsis on Ms McCarthy’s website:

The memory of these misshapen ugly creatures has faded from man’s memory now, yet tales of their treachery live on in ancient scripts. ‘The Formorian’ is glimpse into this mythological world. Where men are gods and throw flames in the face of their enemy. Where swords can speak and tell of their conquests to their masters.

* Director: Aideen McCarthy
* Writer: Stephen Murphy/Aideen McCarthy
* Producer: Dave Leahy
* Editor: Jamie Fitzpatrick
* Director of Photography: Stephen Murphy
* Sound: Egoboo, Dublin.
* Music: C.E. O’Floinn

The film was shot on Super 35mm on Fuji 250D 8562 using a Moviecam compact with Cooke S4 Lenses.

The good thing about the film is its cinematography and special effects. The bad thing, however, is the narrator’s voice. The narrator just ruined it for me.

Otherwise, I think this film is really well executed.

    Unfortunately, this IS the whole thing! :)Although Aideen McCarthy has been asked this question often (i read it somewhere…either on her website or the BBC site)…and she herself has said that there were no such plans to make a feature-length film out of it. (Although she was working on some other feature length scripts… *sigh*)I am also of the opinion that the subject she chose was too broad for a 5 minute short. At least 15-20 minutes would have been better.
